    Scripture

    Genesis 2: 21-24

    21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[a] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[b] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

    23 The man said,

    “This is now bone of my bones
        and flesh of my flesh;
    she shall be called ‘woman,’
        for she was taken out of man.”

    24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

    Prayer

    Lord, we thank you for the institution of marriage.  For the joy and happiness, companionship, intimacy and love we find in it. The legitimacy we receive when we make a vow with you makes this the most powerful and sacred commitment on earth.  When we truly unconditionally love our spouse, we “put aside all anger, wrath, malice, abuse, lying and impurity” (Col.3:8-9) and we put on “a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other” (Col. 3-12)

    Lord, when couples are able to share and support each other in their faith and relationship with you, it fulfills your purpose for us to love each other and others.  We bear each others’ burdens and we help and strengthen each other’s faith.  We are blessed by any children that result from our love, and we know together we can handle the trials in life that might come our way.  Thank you for your creation of this incredible relationship that constantly points the world to what the relationship should look like between Christ and the Church.  Help every marriage in our church grow in and model this daily.

    Amen.
